CHENGDU CHUNXI PLAZA

Location:

Chengdu, Sichuan, China

This project consists of the renovation of a deteriorated existing shopping center, mainly in the facade design and prominent parts of the interior, to cater to the millennial generation.

Chengdu Chunxi Plaza sits in a very busy part of the city, surrounded by recent growth. The building housing the shopping center in its base was both dated and lacked prominence. Our series of design options show different ways in which the building can better inhabit the corner, attract attention, open the inside to public view, and fit with the future direction of busy and young Chengdu.

The project takes inspiration from the famous Sichuan opera called "Changing Faces" where performers change face masks while they sing, dance, and perform, so as to represent a variety of characters and expressions. Our design options either allude to these opera masks directly or by suggestion as the facade is allowed to change mechanically and electronically throughout the day.
